Unit 33 - Comic Books

Task 1:
- Fantagraphics was founded in 1976 by Michael Catron and Gary Groth.

- Fantagraphics is based in Seattle, Washington, USA. Its a different type of headquarters as it is in a house instead of an office.

- Fantagraphics mission statement is - Publishers of the worlds greatest cartoonists.

- Fantagraphics think that the art is the potential of the comic book medium and wanted to elevate the forum of the comic book medium.

- They treated the creators differently because they let the creators own their work and the creator was given a royalty based on how many copies were sold, they let them benefit from their own work where as bigger companies were not and therefore exploiting the creators.

- Love and Rockets was published and because it included sex, drugs etc. Artists became aware that they could represent life in a full spectrum and in more detail.

- Fantagraphics publish books, graphic novels and comic books as their products. Comic books are stories told mainly by images apposed to books because books are told using huge chunks of text. Graphic novels are the same as comic books accept that graphic novels are released as one whole story on one date, where as comic books are brought out once every month.

- Titles - Ghost World, How to be Happy, Love and Rockets, Neat Stuff and The Complete Peanuts. They are all either comic books or graphic novels, Ghost World and How to be Happy are graphic novels where as Love and Rockets, Neat Stuff and The Complete Peanuts are all comic books.

- Peter Bagge a cartoonist was the writer and the artist for the comic book Neat Stuff. Daniel Clowes is another cartoonist and he was the writer and artist for the graphic novel Ghost World. Love and Rockets was created by the brothers Gilbert Hernandez and Jaime Hernandez, they are both cartoonists and were the writers and artists for this comic book. Eleanor Davis was the artist and writer for the graphic novel How to be Happy. Charles M. Schulz was the cartoonist who created the comic book series called The Complete Peanuts.

Task 2:

Content and style
Charles Burns based his comic book 'Robot Love' on the comic book 'Dick Tracy' by Chester Gould.
He used a similar style of art within his comic book, the art is black and white for both comic books, the drawings of characters are very similar styled with the eyes and head shapes. Robot Love based its main character on the main character in Dick Tracy which was a detective, in Dick Tracy the detective was just an ordinary detective in a world of humans where as Charles Burns developed the character and made the world a place where both humans and robots live, and the main detective was made into a detective that is also a Lucha Libre.

Meaning
Charles burns involves black comedy within his comic book 'Big Baby'. He uses it to explore and highlight grotesque aspects of suburban life. Burns does a similar thing in his comic book 'Robot Love' because in that comic book the art is all black and white, the settings are dark like the alleyway, he uses monsters as villains in the 'Big Baby' comic book and he does a similar thing with robots in the 'Robot Love' comic book, also he creates a mystery sense in both comic books where the villains that he represents with robots are making a conspiracy and are up to something and no one knows what just like the monsters in 'Big Baby' are mysterious and up to something. He really highlights different beings and that they are villains, he creates the meaning of mystery and horror through how he shows different life forms and conspiracy within them.

Target Audience
The target audience for the comics that Charles Burns produces are teenagers and most importantly those who prefer underground comics opposed to the stereotypical super hero comics. This is because producers like Burns want to make people aware that comic books are not all like the super heroes and therefore they try and show what different types of comics there are.

Characters
Charles Burns created a character in 1982 called El Borbah, Burns made this character because he loved wrestling as a child. When Burns got older he noticed Mexican wrestling and how they all looked like super heroes and this caught his attention and gave him the idea for El Borbah. When Burns needed an idea for a long running comic book he needed a good protagonist and whilst watching Mexican wrestling he came across a wrestler who he thought looked very different and so he started drawing new ideas for the character and once he had the sketch of it he liked he used that character for the comic book.

Ideas:
Pirates - different sets of pirates all looking for the same treasure, villain is a captain with his own ship, he has a whole crew of pirates and the good guy is a pirate that used to know the villain well and know is recruiting pirates to help him to stop the villains. I will either make it my own or I might base it on the film Pirates of the Caribbean.

Football player by day - Alcoholic arrogant footballer who earns a lot of money and he has a really big alcohol problem, he always drinks and every time he consumes alcohol he turns into a huge slice of pizza and does terrible things to people around him, no one has ever noticed it was him doing it but they are about to find out and come for him, this is a slightly different type of story as this main character is a villain and there isn't really a hero of the film.

The scripts that I have wrote - Adamelia Cholland about a character who starts of in jail and is in search of revenge for her brothers death, it involves two main characters of the girl who is 22 years old and her dad, it has a twist ending and the first scene is set in a prison cell.

Another written script - Evil villain Arsene Wenger and the apocalyptic world because of a virus and a rebellion of people rise up against him. A horrible virus made through animal testing has emerged in the world and has infected billions of people, through this a dictatorship has occurred through the hands of Arsene Wenger and his followers, its about a boy who was born into the world and his mother and father where following the evil leader Arsene Wenger. His mother catches the virus and so is ordered for execution and events transpire and both his parents are killed and he escapes and leads an uprising with some outlanders to fight the army.

Superhero in a fantasy world where everyone is a type of food. The main character is a sausage and he is very rich and has a lot of technology and equipment, he strives on making the world a better place and stopping any potential threats to the world, he is also very arrogant and most people think he only thinks for himself. This story will be about one bad guy who tries to take over the world and there will be a few other speaking characters although the main characters will be the superhero and the villain.
