The Killers – Mr Bright side
|
|
1. editing / post-production
|
For the music video there has been
a lot of colour correction used, mostly bright colours used to bring out the
colour of the set and the costumes.
|
2. mise-en-scene
|
People, males and females, the
band, a stage, drums, guitars, dresses, suits, wigs, checkers board, tables,
chairs, alcohol, apples, statues.
|
3. content / performance
|
The music video has the band on a
small stage singing the song whilst things go on around them with the people
watching and the lead singer. The song used is the studio version and the
band are just miming the words although it is very convincing and it is in
time all the way through the video.
|
4. camera shot/angles types
|
Long shots of people dancing, close
ups of the band playing instruments and singing, close-ups when two of the
men stare at each other whilst playing a game.
|
5. narrative
|
The band are on stage singing the
song and the lead singers is telling a story whilst the focus is on two
people from the crowd, one man and a female, the male in the crowd is shown
top be bad and controlling as he is taking control of the woman, the singer
is telling the story and is also focused on in the story to show the
Brightside and help the situation and ends up being with the girl.
|
6. conform / subvert / amplify
(tone of lyrics & music)
|
Conform: The song has the word
‘jealousy’ a lot and the music video is about one guy being jealous when he
looks at a girl with someone else. The song is followed because in the lyrics
he uses the line ‘I am Mr Brightside and is trying to be the other option for
the girl as she is being treated badly by the guy she is with.

Coldplay - Paradise
|
|
1. editing / post-production
|
They have used colour correction on
every scene, the colours are bright and they have used so many different
settings to show the full journey that the character goes on.
|
2. mise-en-scene
|
There is an elephant that is the
main focus of the story (Chris Martin in an elephant costume), there are
bikes, a unicycle, cars, drums, guitars, the band in elephant costumes, stage
performance, crowds, animals, police, escalators, cardboard boxes,
underground train, aeroplane.
|
3. content / performance
|
There is no one playing or singing
the song for the first ¾ of the song, it is just the studio version song that
plays over the story, the band is shown right at the end playing instruments
although they are all wearing elephant costumes so it doesn’t show any of
them singing the song.
|
4. camera shot/angles types
|
It has close ups of the Elephant,
it has establishing shots for some of the settings, Close ups when an object
is being shown, long shots of the crowd, mid shots of the band performing.
|
5. narrative
|
The story is about an elephant that
is in a cage and he escapes, and goes on a journey to find his band. He uses
the underground, an aeroplane and a unicycle, he stands on the side of a road
trying to earn money for the unicycle and eventually he finds his band in the
desert and the start performing and it then simulates to them performing on stage
in front of a crowd.
|
6. conform / subvert / amplify
(tone of lyrics & music)
|
Conform: The music
video follows the song, the start has the elephant trying to escape and
thinking about how he can get to where he wants which links to the start of the
song where it says ‘dreaming of paradise’, it then continues to follow the
song as the song is like a journey itself that leads to a big happy ending
that can be described as paradise, and that is the journey for the elephant
as he finds his band and the music video ends with a happy ending with
celebrations and a performance in front of a huge crowd.

Feedback from test video:
- In order to do lip syncing you need to practice a lot to get it right.
- The story needs to be clearly shown, get someone from outside your group to watch it and see if they understand it.
Music video analysis:
Song 1: Tyler the Creator - IFHY
Song 2: Maroon 5 - Payphone ft. Wiz Khalifa
Similarities:
- Both songs are based on one male and a love interest.
- They both involve rapping as well as singing.
- Both videos are around 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
- Both of these videos have a clear storyline.
Differences:
- Tyler the Creator's music video includes two songs.
- There are many different camera shots in the Maroon 5 music video than Tyler the Creator's.
- There is a complex storyline in the Maroon 5 music video and Tyler the Creator's music video is much more simplistic.
- In the Maroon 5 music video there are special effects and there isn't in the other music video.
- There are more scenes/locations in the Maroon 5 music video.
Andrew Goodwin's Music Video Theory
1. The genre of Maroon 5's Payphone music video is hip-hop. There is a love story within the music video between a male and female, the music video doesn't have a stage performance, it is based mainly on one person and it has an action sense to the video with a bank robbery and a car chase, there isn't many other genre characteristics to this music video to do with hip-hop. Where as the music video Snoop Dogg - Gin & Juice is within the genre of rap and it is a song within a setting of many cars although similar to mine it is based around one person but does not have a love interest.
2. Mine does not subject women in a bad way, it does not show them in a sexual sense or a violent sense and the only stereotype the give to a woman in this video is that she is the damsel in distress. This is different in the music video Gin & Juice as they have one scene where one man gives condoms to another when he see's a few women walk into one room which shows women in a sexual stereotype.
3. In this music video the lyrics match up to the video occasionally but not all the time, the lyrics make sense with the video and quite often they show the male character at a payphone while the lyrics are "Im at a Payphone trying to call home..." Other than that the lyrics follow with the video but do not match up correctly. This is similar to the music video Gin & Juice as the lyrics and the music link up quite a few times yet not all the time as he sings about what he is doing although it is not like that throughout.
4. This music video has a lot of close-ups of the characters when they sing. Whenever Adam Levine and Wiz Khalifa sing they have close up camera shots, there isn't too many other close ups on the main singer as they try a lot of different camera angles for the story and they are very fast camera shots to make the story interesting. This is similar to the music video Gin & Juice by Snoop Dogg as that video is focused on him and most of the shots are just close ups or mid shots of him singing although it is done throughout the Gin & Juice video but only about half the time in the Maroon 5 music video.
5. This video is not based on any film, TV program or other music video, the story is about a bank robbery and then a car chase away from the police, it also involves a love interest and therefore this music video seems like a film from the action genre although it was not based or taken from anything it was just there idea to do an action storyline. This is similar to the Gin & Juice music video as that video is not based on anything either.

Roles:
- Shaun - Actor
- Marco - Producer
- Adam - Cameraman
- Tyler - Director
Ideas so far:
General Concept:
Shaun's wakes up, goes downstairs make breakfast realises he’s missing ingredients and walks to the shop. Ends with microwave shot.
Two sides of Shaun, Shaun is at home really depressed and out of food, he is thinking in his mind about going to the shops and going for a walk and having a nice time outside of his house although he doesn't have any energy or motive to get up and go out so he just sits at home feeling depressed and thinking about going out where as he never actually leaves his house.

Ideas that don’t fit lyrics and not sure where to have the idea:
- Side on shot of Shaun looking into fridge, incorporating the lip syncing, realising that nothing in there.
- Walking up chalk hill.
- Walking past school (memories)
- Making something in the morning and doesn't have the ingredients.
- Walking to the shop noticing all the people and buildings around that bring back memories.
- Shaun pours cereal box and single coco pop falls out.
- Shaun opens fridge and sees there’s no food, empty egg cartons etc.

H) Certification and Scheduling
We asked for permission to use this song, although we didn't get a response.
Mac Miller’s ‘Objects in the mirror’ is not exactly an offensive song and would not need to be certified into a specific time bracket so it can be played at any time for radio and TV music channels as it has no bad language although in one moment of the song the lyrics mention suicide, however this is depicted as a negative thing and is not insightful in any way the lyric that mentions suicide is:
“ Don't even say you about to end it all….Your life precious ain't a need to go and kill yourself ”.
The song itself is about drugs but not once is that actually mentioned, the song actually seems like it is about a girl but Mac Miller said in an interview that it is about his prior drug addiction and drugs in general.
We will broadcast our music video on MTV, we believe it is not appropriate to view before the watershed, as the song is rated PAL.
We will also put the video on Youtube, and will not age restrict the video in any way. The album as a whole is rated parental advisory (PAL), this is also the rating we have for our music video.
We asked for permission to use this song, although we didn't get a response.
LO3:
A) Footage review
Setting up the equipment
Setting up equipment
DSLR Camera
To set up the camera first we check the battery life, to make sure it is full and then turn it off once we are satisfied. After this we insert the SD card and check how much storage space we have available. After turning the dial on the top to the video setting we are ready to shoot.
But not before removing the lens cap!
Tripod
When using the tripod we make sure to be mindful of our space when carrying it.
When using it we first find the spot we wish to place it, then hold it above this spot while extending the legs to the length we need and locking them in place. After we check the tripod is balanced using the spirit level, we can remove the small plate at the top of the tripod and attach it to the bottom of the camera. Then we can place the camera on the tripod. We always make sure to take the camera off if we are moving the tripod.
Shoulder Mount.
The shoulder mount came in a case and had to be assembled. The process of assembling the frame of the shoulder mount was simple. First we remove the top plate and attach the camera to it, after which we place that to one side. Then whoever is going to use the shoulder mount puts it on their shoulder, and adjusts the fit and length until it is comfortable. Then we can finally place the camera and top plate back on the shoulder mount and secure it. Now we are ready to shoot.
Flycam
The fly cam came in a case and had to be assembled. The process of assembling the frame of the flycam was more complicated. First we remove the top plate and attach the camera to it, after which we place that to one side. Then we attach the pole portion of the fly cam to a secure level surface, like a table, and then try our best to balance the weight evenly. Then once we think it’s balanced we can finally place the camera and top plate back on the fly cam and secure it. Now we are ready to shoot.
B) How the script and storyboard was followed?
When we started filming we followed both our script and storyboard although as we needed to do a re-shoot to fix our music video and get extra shots, we therefore changed the narrative slightly and filmed different shots so we were not following the storyboard and script anymore. We did still keep all of the video clips that we filmed when following the script and storyboard and used them.
C) How did we follow safe working practices?
When filming we always made sure that there were no hazards and risks that could effect the cast and crew or the equipment or anyone else, with the equipment we only put it in places with enough room and we made sure the ground was even and not slippery so that the equipment would stay still and not fall and break. With some of our shots the cameraman was walking backwards and when this happened we had two people behind him guiding him so that he did not harm himself or the equipment that he was holding.
D) How did we follow the production process?
We followed our production process, we brainstormed and thought of the ideas first as a group, then we made a script and the only thing we didn't follow is that we were going to do the storyboard next but instead we did the recces and the risk assessments and did the storyboard after that instead. We then went out and did a test shoot for some of our shots so we could test what it would come out like and practice in the locations that we chose. Overall we finished the production process by filming and then editing, for the most part we followed the production process. After that we gave ourselves time to review the footage and do a re-shoot for any clips that we still needed to get or change.
E) Genre
Our genre was hip-hop, some of the genre conventions that we used within our video were:
- A small amount of characters (following the story of one person on his own so the focus is strictly on one thing).
- A negative narrative (depression).
- Performance shots (the main character/singer performing parts of the song using lip sync).

The main thing that I changed on my video clips was the colour grading which is the Three-Way-Color Corrector effect on Adobe Premiere. I changed the colour on all of my video clips, I used different colours throughout the video although it was one colour change for each scene so that the scenes looked different to each other although everything that was apart of the same scene had the same colour style so that it fitted together and made sense.
Within my edit I also faded clips in and out of transition to blend them together. As well as that I also changed the keyframes for the position and rotation so that some clips fitted perfectly and looked like one continuous clip.
In our shoot we used a Fly Cam and a shoulder mount, some of our clips came out a bit shaky so in order to correct them and be able to use them in my final edit I used the Warp Stabilizer on those clips to fix the movement and create a more smooth style to the clips and the action going on in the clip.
